A friendly in soccer is simply a match between two teams that is not part of any sort of competitive tournament or league. Friendlies are often used by teams as a way to stay sharp and test out new players or formations, and they are typically played at a neutral site. Many top-level clubs will schedule several friendlies against other top-level clubs from around the world as part of their preseason preparations.
